Having just finished a meal reminding them how God rescued their ancestors from slavery in ancient Egypt, the disciples were understandably apprehensive about what was to come.
Nobody was thinking about Jesus’ death as salvation for human sin. Not a single person sharing Jesus’ last moments on Earth was comforted by the idea his execution was fulfilling a biblical prophecy. Most, if not all attending, would have found those ideas horrifyingly absurd.
